You’ve built your business on pay-to-plays. You’ve done your time, developed your skills, and you’re making good money.
You wake up in the morning, coffee in hand, ready to start assessing which gigs you’ll audition for that day.
You power up your laptop to check out your “go to” pay-to-play site. You’ve logged in a thousand times before, only now, you receive a notice that you don’t have access.
Confused, you try to login again.
Same message.
Panic starts to set in as you attempt to login again, but you keep getting the same “No Access” message.
Then reality starts to set in. Your favorite money making P2P has shut you out.
You reach out to support. Surely there’s just some misunderstanding. You wait patiently for a response, becoming a positive self-talk queen. Finally, the email comes and you open it…
“You’ve violated our policies resulting in the permanent suspension of your account.”
Now sweat is pouring out of your body as you feverishly reply back asking for any information about the policy you violated. You’re sure to let them know that you’ll correct whatever you’ve done right away.
No response.
You keep checking. You decide to reach back out, watching your fingers type faster than they ever have before.
Nothing comes.
Many desperate, pleading emails later you receive your last and final email.
“I’m sorry, there’s nothing we can do for you. The decision has already been finalized.”
And now you see things very clearly.
All of the time you spent on the platform was really building their business.
It’s a tough lesson to learn. You’re left to start over.
When you and I adopt the misconception that auditioning is the job, we put ourselves in a bad position.
While auditions do play a crucial role, it’s critical to understand that we can do better than spending countless hours auditioning in our booth.
Especially when, even the most seasoned among us, are only landing a small percentage of the gigs they audition for.
We need to be smart, strategic, and shape our own future.
Here are 3 steps you can take right now to gain control of your voiceover marketing.
Think about marketing aligned VO services directly to the consumer.
This can be magical because you take yourself out of the competitive VO industry. It can even provide you with a stable financial foundation, enabling you to audition for roles that truly match your skills and bring you the most joy.
Direct marketing with a twist.
Many VO’s have caught on that email marketing can be advantageous. They’ve been getting less and less gigs on the pay-to-play sites and have now turned their attention to email marketing. And they are all saying the exact same thing - “Please listen to my demos”.
Agencies are getting bombarded with the same types of messages every day, day in and day out.
And when VO’s are being extra clever, they’ll send out an email blast saying they are going on vacation, as a way to stay top of mind.
But everyone is doing the same thing.
Thinking outside of the box is no longer an option, it’s now a necessity. And it needs to be high touch (not in a pesky way) whenever possible.
An example is how marketing used to be done.
Remember when you used to get something in the mail? Or how about a newsletter that actually offers your prospects value, while highlighting your personality and expertise?
You can craft a customized, tailored social media marketing experience for your ideal prospects through campaigns aligned with their unique needs and interests.
If you take control of your business, it frees you up to do more of the gigs you got into the business for in the first place. And you can have fun along the way.
